• How much of yourself goes into a character?

They live in my head, so there’s got to be some of me that goes into them. A lot of times there will be one or two little details about a character that comes from me. A favorite food, a habit, how they watch tv, that kind of thing.

• Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

I was, and still am, a huge sci-fi and fantasy fan. I tend not to write either of those. Maybe because that for me is entertainment? I don’t know, because I love writing and reading MM, too. Although, really, if asked I’d still say that sci-fi and fantasy are my favorite.

• Have you ever had to put an ‘in progress’ story aside because of the emotional ties with it?  You were hurting with the characters or didn’t know how to proceed?

The more my characters hurt, the faster I write. Once I hit angst, I hate leaving them there and I write like a fiend until I get them through it.

• Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

I love HEA (and I’ll take HFN). Everyone deserves their happy ending. Besides, there’s so much terrible stuff in the world, it’s important to me that the books I write add happiness.

• How do you choose your covers?

Each publisher is slightly different, but with Dreamspinner you fill out a form, and most of the time the artist manages to interpret what I’ve written down into a great cover. I’m especially pleased with the Iron Eagle Gym covers – they are all clearly a part of the same series.

• What’s next for you as an author?

I have just submitted the next Iron Eagle Gym book – The Eager Boy. This one features Robin and Stack who make appearances in The Dom’s Way.

Honestly, the only good thing I can say about this book is- if you like all sex and pretty much nothing but sex, this is the book for you. Otherwise, I totally stand by my 2 stars.

I have read a couple of others in this series and while they weren’t great works of literature, they were fun, sexy and had a story. This installment had the premise of a story- but it never materialized.

Neal takes Way on as his new submissive. Even though Way has no experience in it at all- save for working at the gym that caters to Doms and subs. Neal proclaims that he will go slowly and teach Way everything there is to know about D/s. I didn’t see that happen. I just saw tons and tons and TONS of sex, Way constantly agreeing to things because Neal wanted him to and absolutely no character depth.

On top of that, Neal doesn’t really act like a Dom. He convinces Way to do things, but to me it seemed like coercion rather than teaching. He isn’t stern or strong. I’d consider him pretty wimpy really. And Way isn’t submissive, he is shy and unexposed. Not only to life to but to sex and relationships.

I’m sorry, but this was a wasted read for me.

The first character that came to me to ask for his story told for A New Way to Dance was Seth, the dancer. And I know exactly where he came from. I had seen a number of images of dancers, and several videos of male dancers doing their thing.

These guys are in such good shape – not an ounce of fat anywhere, muscles shown off to best advantage in skin tight leotards. Muscles that are being pushed as far as they can. On top of that, they’re interpreting the music, putting so much emotion into each move. It is a wonderful combination.

Every time I saw a picture or a video, the knowledge that I was going to have a character who was a dancer became deeper. Then suddenly there was Seth with this sad story of his nasty breakup and as soon as I had that, Brook came running to claim Seth as his own.

I hope you enjoy their story!

“You’re sure I can’t get you anything to eat?”

“I haven’t exercised enough to. You won’t offend me if you eat, though. Honestly.”

“I’m not hungry yet—I had that cheesecake.” Brook tilted his head. “So how many calories a day do you eat?”

“I try to keep it under twelve hundred.” Not that it was any of Brook’s business. He averaged a thousand on days he didn’t exercise.

Brook looked at him like he was crazy. “You must be skin and bones.”

He wasn’t huge, he guessed. He answered with a long, steady look that was meant to tell Brook to back the fuck off.

Brook shook his head like he’d just got it. “Okay. Movie. What are you in the mood for?”

“What’s your favorite?” He felt a little embarrassed, a little silly for being here. It had been obvious that Brook had been interested when they’d met previously, but now… Seth was awkward.

“Oh, I could never just pick one.” Brook laughed. “Maybe if you picked a genre…”

“How about something campy and fun?”

“We could do the grandfather of campy and fun—Rocky Horror?”

“It’s just a jump to the left?”

They sang the next few verses together, Seth surprising himself with his laughter.

Brook pointed to the couch and he moved there while Brook found the movie and put it in the player. Then the man joined him.

He sipped his drink, shifting as he tried to find a comfortable spot.

Brook offered him a couple of pillows and he managed to get them adjusted to where he was mostly comfortable. And sort of leaning against his host.

“Sorry, is this okay?”

“I’m great, are you comfortable?”

He nodded. He was, very.

So comfortable, in fact, that he dozed off before Janet and Brad got to Frankfurter’s house.

Synopsis

Dancer Seth Avery has it all. He’s at the top of his game as a dancer and he’s in love with famous dance director Fayden DelMonaco, the man who is his sub. Seth’s whole world is turned upside down when Fayden dumps him in the nastiest and most public way possible. To compound matters, he’s in near fatal car crash shortly thereafter that leaves him severely injured.

Brook Turner is an ex-lawyer turned micro-brewer, baby-brother of Seth’s best friend Lizzie. The two met briefly before Seth’s accident, but it’s when they meet again six years later that they get a chance to act on the attraction they’d initially felt.

With Brook’s help, Seth begins to heal not only from his residual physical injuries, but also from the emotional ones inflicted by Fayden. Will it be enough to keep the two of them together?

“Did you see USA Today, man?” Julian plopped down, eyes wide. “Fayden is… Well, he’s not naming names, but…”

Seth looked at one of his oldest friends and arguably the best choreographer he knew and tried not to growl. “I saw.”

He saw. His brother saw. His mom saw. His neighbor. Fayden’s sister. Ernie at the fucking convenience store where he bought his daily diet energy shot saw.

“World-Famous Director Escapes from Abusive Sex-Slave Relationship! Says He Feared for His Life!”

Sex slave.

Christ.

Ten years they’d been together. He’d been nineteen when he’d met Fay. Nineteen and horny and amazed that a man almost twenty years his senior with money and power and the most beautiful eyes on earth would want a dancer in the chorus.

“It’s all lies,” Julian told him. “You should sue him.”

“Just drop it, Jules. It’s no big deal.”

Just a huge, life-changing, world-altering deal.

Julian’s eyebrow went up, the man not saying another word but still speaking volumes.

“What do you want me to say? I… I don’t have anything.” He had an apartment. The cops had let him take his car and computer—after they’d copied the hard drive for evidence.

Christ.

“Honey, I’m on your side here.” Julian hugged him.

“I know. I do. Thank God for that.” Who else would he have called from the jail? His lawyer was Fay’s. His friends were Fay’s. Julian was it. His saving grace.

“Come on out with me tonight. There’s a new bar that we haven’t ever been to—he won’t be there.”

“No. Not yet. I’m not going out right now. I need to recover.” Seth needed his space.

“You need someone to take the bad taste of that asshole out of your mouth,” Julian said.

Seth blinked, then started laughing, deep, full belly laughs that felt so good. God, this sucked so hard. “I caught him with another man. That new dancer. Dylan.”

Dylan was nineteen now. Ah, the irony.

“Shit, he’s old enough to be that boy’s grandfather!”

“Yeah. Well, you know…” Seth was going to lie down and die, simple as that. Okay, he wasn’t, but he was going to pretend to, mentally.

“You think we should warn Dylan what a predator asshole he is?”

“Poor, innocent, victimized Fay?” He shrugged. “You wait. I’ll stop getting jobs soon.” It was inevitable.

Julian shook his head. “That’s not fair.” Seth noticed that his friend didn’t say it wasn’t going to happen.

“Life’s not fair. I have to work out and head home. I have an audition for a music video in the morning.” Hopefully he’d make a good impression. It would be good to put some money in the bank before the jobs started drying up.

Julian hugged Seth tight. “If there’s anything I can do, honey…”

“I love you, honest. Maybe we’ll meet for brunch on Sunday? Somewhere new?” Somewhere the paparazzi and Fayden wouldn’t be.

“You got it. Text me the deets.”

“Absolutely.” He grabbed his coffee and headed out of the little coffee shop outside of the studio he’d rehearsed in most of his adult life.

He was going to lose that too, he’d bet. Everything was going to just disappear because Fay had decided to trade him in for a younger model and was doing it in the nastiest way possible. Seth could feel everyone staring at him, could hear people talking about him.

He couldn’t stand it anymore and it was only going to get worse.

“Hey. Seth. I…” Lizzie Bean came up, took his arm, the leggy dancer as tall as he was. They’d worked together a hundred times at least. “I don’t know what to say except that I love you, man, and people suck.”

He made this weird half-tickled, half-surprised sound. “They totally do. God, they do.”

“Come have supper with us? Mel is grilling chicken.”

Mel was an amazing cook. And it was tempting, being with people who wouldn’t look at him like he was a monster.

“Please. Come on. You look exhausted and I promise to just feed you foods with no real calories and ply you with wine.” She put her hand on his arm. “Please.”

“God, you’re so demanding.” Seth nodded, though, found a smile. “Let’s go.”

She beamed at him and slid her hand into the crook of his elbow when they started to walk. Lizzie and Mel lived not that far from the studio in a converted loft with the most amazing roof garden full of potted trees and flowering plants and several large raised areas where they grew vegetables.

Mel was big into farm-to-table cooking and tried to grow as much of his own produce as he could.

Lizzie told him a story about one of Mel’s nephews—the man had far too many nieces and nephews to keep track of—who had gotten a skateboard for his birthday and become the terror of the neighborhood.

Seth tried to laugh in all the right places. Every so often he’d catch sight of himself in a window, just the barest hint, and he’d sigh. He’d really thought Fay was his Mr. Right. They’d been into the same things, the chemistry had been off the charts, they were uber-compatible in bed…

In Making a Splash, Austin is a natural diver. In fact, he’s at a public pool, showing off for his friends when Vince discovers him. He’s on the three meter board.

I can remember when I was around ten, I jumped off my first five meter platform. Thinking back on it, I’m surprised I actually not only made it up there, but then jumped given that I now have a crazy fear of heights. I don’t even like standing on a chair to reach for something at the top of bookcases.

However, this time I not only climbed, I also jumped. Now, I had never jumped from this high and no one had ever told me how I should do it. I remember jumping and going deep enough that my feet touched the bottom of the pool. I did push up but not very hard and I didn’t think I was going to break the surface in time to take the breath I needed. What a panic! I did not go for a second jump.

Of course, now I know that I should have spread my arms as soon as I hit the water and if I made it to the bottom, I should have pushed up hard. Live and learn.

I’m jealous of Austin and his ability to play so freely not only that high up, but doing tricks in the air at the same time.

“Huh?” A big pair of green eyes met his. “I don’t play ball.”

“I sure as hell hope you don’t.” He nodded toward the diving board. “I’m talking about diving. No way you picked those moves up on your own.” No fucking way.

“Nope. Practiced ’em on the trampoline.” Austin hauled himself out of the water.

“All by yourself.” He didn’t follow diving anymore, Vince reminded himself. He was done.

“Yep. I like jumping. Hell of a rush.”

“Tell you what. You show me the toughest dive you know how to do, and I’ll buy you dinner.” With a captive audience and without all the other people trying to get a piece of the kid, maybe he could convince Austin that he was exactly what Austin needed in a coach. Or at least he could if he were still in the diving world. Which he wasn’t.

“Dinner like McDonald’s or dinner like shrimp and steak?”

He chuckled. Kid was smart too. He took a mental look at his bank account and wished he hadn’t.

“Like dinner anywhere you want.” After all, he didn’t follow diving anymore, wasn’t going to get back into coaching. But if he did? This was the person he’d want to do it with. It would be worth breaking the bank for.

“It’s a deal.” Austin held his hand out to shake.

I’m a huge fan of Sean Michael, I was curious about the blurb of this new release, Making a Splash as soon as I read it, cause I honestly haven’t read a lot of stories focused on the diving discipline and I was very intrigued. The author can write so it’s not a surprise the novel is well written and engaging. Unfortunately despite this, Making a Splash wasn’t a winner to me.

Vince is thirty-four years old, he was a great diving coach, well known until three years ago he was accused of child molesting, all false but the diving world hadn’t welcomed Vince anymore. And then it came the day he met Austin and saw in the younger man a potential diving champion. They soon started training and at the same time they begun to understand something is going to happen between them, the attraction is clear and from the moment they will act on it, they will barely be able to keep their hands off each other till the end.

And that’s the reason why I’m not giving the story the 3 stars, there were really too many sex scenes and maybe I simply wasn’t in the mood for just hotness and nothing more, but in my opinion they took too much space from the plot and the development of the love story between Austin and Vince. Perhaps Making A Splash would have worked better for me had it been shorter and with a more complete ending, because here the end was really abrupt and caught me unprepared.

This was a nice story.  Seth has had a real crap couple of weeks and it’s made even worse when his dreams are shattered in a car accident, he has continued his life but far away from his past.  Brook knows right away when he spots Seth again and can’t help but feel the pull to make him his.

Seth hasn’t even had another person touch him other than doctors in more than six years and he know there is now way he could be desirable to another person.  Brook shoots that right out of the water.  Now Seth will just have to believe that Brook is telling him the truth.  Their relationship builds up pretty fast but I didn’t see them jumping to anything willy nilly they worked it all out when needed.

This story is told from both characters’ points of view which helps to understand what both are thinking and how they feel.  It broke my heart to see Seth continue to struggle with feeling as if he was worthy of anything and how he felt that he needed to be the perfect weight in order for him be worth anything.  I loved watching Brook support and help Seth even when Seth felt he was too much for anyone.  They really begin to build their life together complete with dinosaur Christmas lights.

While new couple Tide and Lance spend time deepening their relationship and further introducing Lance to the joys and vagaries of being a sub, established couple Tyrone and Bran discover that they still have a thing or two to learn as well.

A new job finds Bran run off his feet, and a visit to the eye doctor leads to the discovery of a brain tumor. Bran is terrified. He strives to be the perfect sub for his beautiful master and sees the tumor as a personal failing as he tries to handle every last phone call, e-mail, and text that comes in, no matter how early or late. When Tyrone finally finds out about the tumor Bran’s been keeping a secret, he realizes he’s been taking his sub for granted, and he works to rediscover his boy and their relationship. Of course, that’s easier said than done given that Bran’s job is taking up all his time and he would rather pretend the tumor just doesn’t exist than actually deal with it.

It’s going to take all of Tyrone’s prowess as a master to help guide Bran through these troubled waters.

I am usually a fan of Sean Michael’s books but this one did not work for me and it was a combination of elements in the story and narration that made it even worse.  Bran and Lance both had so much trouble throughout the first part of the book thinking that they weren’t “worthy” of their masters and that is one dynamic that doesn’t work for me along with the focus on perfection and people looks.  In the end the focus on being perfect was pushed aside for being partners and perfect for each other which was nicer.  Other than that I had a hard time following the timeline in the story but I’m sure if that was from not having the story in front of me to see or not.

Unfortunately I can’t really say that Jeff Gelder did a nice job narrating the story.  He used different voices for each character but they would change throughout the story and then the character described as having a “deep sexy voice” had a very feminine lilt and soft voice most of the time.  He tried really hard to make it sound sensual but I just got the feeling that I was listening to a bad porno.  I think it’s safe to say that this story did not work for me, maybe at some point I can go back and try to read it and see if I don’t have quite the same opinion of it but it won’t be anytime soon.

I found the Dragon Soul series by Sean Michael by reading the second book in the series first, Seduced by the Tide and loved it.  So of course that meant I had to go running back to find the first and get caught up on what I missed out, the world building and the references alluded to in the second story that I didn’t quite understand.  I am delighted to say that Branded by Flames is just as hot (no pun intended), just as sexy as I was hoping while giving me some of the foundation I was looking for this series.  I can see that Michael intends to draw out the information about each brother and the dragons in general over the series, which I’m more than ok with.  I’m full of anticipation now to see how each brother’s story plays out.

Here Jake (of course I have the benefit of the second story) seems to understand the significance of all the dragons that decorate Shae’s skin and occupy his mind and art.  We will too after a while.  Shae has a past with a Dom that’s left him alone, outside of the leather community.  Part of this story is all about trust issues, breaking trust and rebuilding it.  How do you do that when one of you is a dragon?  Interesting situation.  There is a lot of kinky sex play here as Jake and Shae start to explore boundaries and issues of trust.  If you’re not into BDSM or D/s, this is not the series or book for you.  If you are, read on!

I find the two of them incredibly sexy together, combustible even (ok someone had to say it).  Jake the dragon needed more work for me as a character than Shae the man, Shae having more depth, more poignancy given his past history and pain.  However, we get to see them again in Seduced by the Tide and there they come together even better as a couple.

Branded by Flames is the first of at least five stories as there are five Beteferoce dragon brothers looking for their soulmates.  I have to admit Mark’s story is the one I want the most. But that’s not to be. Park ranger Luke Beteferoce is the next brother to get his story.  See you in September!  Until then, if you love dragons, hot sex and kink, here’s a series for you!

The Teddy Bear Club is a sweet, mostly angst free story about men, their kids and the guys who love them both.  The Roasty Bean, a local coffee cafe, plays host to gay dads and their kids once a week.  It gives the kids a place to play, the dads a needed respite and place to socialize away from home with others who understand what they are going through.  Each man there has come to fatherhood or guardians of the babies/children in their lives in a different ways.  In this  story (this is book one of a new series), the men each have their sister’s children.  Aiden’s sister has been institutionalized and her children turned over to him, Devon’s sister left her baby with him and disappeared.  Now each is coping with being a dad and having a family who depends upon them.

It’s mostly about Devon and Aiden learning to lean and trust each other as their relationship grows.  Devon learning to be a dad to the baby he’s grown to love and all of them forming a family. The romance is intermingled with babies and kids, the balance seems just right.  It’s a lovely story with the family drama coming in late in the novel.  Its dealt with swiftly, almost too swiftly for my tastes given the buildup.  Almost boom, mother dealt with, drama over.  However, it’s still a very satisfactory ending.

The name of the story comes in at the ending of the book.  There at a gathering (with more characters sure to get their own story), the men   decide what to name their weekly get together….what else to call it but The Teddy Bear Club.  What else indeed.  I’ll be there for the rest of the tales to be sure.

First off, thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue words for hosting me today!

Every now and then I find myself watching a ghost hunting show, but I never thought I’d be writing a book about ghost hunters! The Supernatural Explorers – The Supers for short – are a band of gay men who go ghost hunting. They’re searching for their big break – they want a TV show of their own.

I wasn’t sure when I started writing this book what the conflict was going to be – I guess you could say that I was doing some ghost hunting of my own! I thought maybe it was going to be the whole trying to get a TV show thing and that their success would be the big finish. True to form, though, these guys who appeared in my head, had their own agenda (or at least the ghosts they were hunting did) and as I wrote, the whole plotline unravelled in front of me and suddenly I had a story that was so much more than just trying to get a show. That’s all I’m going to say, though – I wouldn’t want to spoil anyone.

I had a lot of fun writing the book (even the gross parts) and I hope you enjoy reading it!

A lot of my books are first times for the characters – their first meeting, their first kiss, falling in love with each other, etc. Unlikely Hero is different in that the characters were together in the past.

Eric and Brock split up because they wanted very different things out of their lives. Eric wanted children, Brock wanted to keep on with his high-powered life – business dinners and outings, Christmas in the Bahamas, etc. So they parted ways nine years before the events in Unlikely Hero.

Because of the nature of their split, there were no lingering hard feelings over things said or anything like that, and it wasn’t like they’d fallen out of love, they simply couldn’t figure out how to make their two visions of the future work together. And both men felt very strongly about the wanting kids/not wanting kids thing.

It was fun to explore how these two men, who were so very different nine years ago, and are still on the surface very different, react when they’re brought back together again. Nine years of being without each other, and without a significant other, leaves a lot of possibilities open when they reconnect.

I really enjoyed writing the story the characters brought me and I hope you enjoy it too!

I really enjoy writing stories like Daddy Needs a Date. I like exploring the family side of gay romance. Part of it is that I love seeing any father be sweet and caring with their children, so having two melts my heart even more.

In Daddy Needs a Date, Alex isn’t so sure about dating a single dad. He’s never had any desire to have children of his own and his job isn’t conducive to having kids. Hell, it’s not even conducive to dating, really. It’s not that he doesn’t like kids, he’s simply never considered having any of his own.

To be honest, I had thought the story was going to go in a very different direction than it did. But as always, the characters have their own ideas. And what was supposed to be a tug and pull between Alex wanting to date Ryan, but not being at all sure about the children angle turned into something else. In part because Ryan was an even better father than I’d anticipated, and because Alex was a better man than I’d originally painted him as when I started the story.

I think it’s a good thing the characters zigged when I would have had them zag because the story is better for it. I hope you enjoy the direction they insisted I go in.

Composing a Family is the sixth book in the Mannies Incorporated series. And as I do one every year just before Christmas, that makes this the sixth year of them! I can’t believe it had been that long, but at the same time, it feels like I’ve always been doing them.

I love coming back to the series every year and finding new fathers and mannies who need to be together to make their families complete. Whether there is one kid or eight, or anything in between, the men and the kids come together to be a whole, a complete unit. I hope I can keep coming up with new men and situations for them.

These stories are gentle and sweet, and a nice contrast to the BDSM series that I write. They help me have a rounded “writing meal”, so to speak.

In Composing a Family, Daniel knows he wants a family and did the research, hired the surrogate, and wound up with more than he’d bargained for when it turned out there were triplets on the way. He’s in over his head and he knows it. I don’t think he believes he can actually do this until he’s in the middle of doing it -trial by fire!

One of the neat things about the book is that there are two generations of mannies involved. Daniel’s own manny is still in the picture and I loved how Tenor and Matt got along – they had a common bond right off the bat. And it amused me that Daniel wound up hiring a manny for his own children who was reminiscent of his own manny.

“No, I love my work. I’m always in that space.”

“I love my work too, but I still like some time off.” He shrugged. “Whatever works for you, man. You do know that babies will screw with your schedule, eh?”

“Yeah. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be all party pooper.”

“Nah—if you need to get to bed, you need to get to bed. It was a good time, though, wasn’t it?” He offered Daniel a warm grin.

“It really, really was. I’d like to do it again if you would.”

He was more than pleased by the request. “Yeah, I definitely would.”

“Me too.” Daniel reached over and shook Ten’s hand.

A handshake? He used the connection to tug Daniel toward him and gave him a hug, a good, long one. Daniel took a deep breath, then hugged him back.

The guy was more solid than he looked and he was a better hugger than Ten had anticipated. He approved. Ten liked the contrast between Daniel’s delicate appearance and his hidden strength.

He realized suddenly that he’d been hugging his boss for far too long and he wasn’t sure how to let go without it being super awkward.

It then became apparent Daniel was asleep, breathing slow and easy, resting against him. Oh man, that was… really kind of adorable, actually.

He moved slowly, managing to get Daniel back onto the love seat without waking him up. Then he draped a cover over him. He hoped it wasn’t too uncomfortable for Daniel, what with the way his feet were hanging over the edge of the seat, but the only other solution was putting Daniel in his bed, and even though it was huge, he didn’t think it was a great idea. He wanted to keep this job.

Daniel settled in with a soft little sigh.

He fought the urge to kiss Daniel’s forehead, but he did whisper, “Good night, dear prince,” before moving into his room and going to bed.

I love this series.  With each story, Michael is building a intriguing mythology and story.  We see the brothers find their soulmate, and it appears that the brothers finding their mates might be signaling an approaching event. Hints are falling all over the place…but what sort?  The dragons are magical, each in their own way and their bonding to their mates is sizzling hot and oh so sexy with a helping of kink (what kind depends on the brother).

There are five brothers and three are now bonded.  The two with the most difficult paths ahead because of what we know of their pasts are still to come.  It’s those stories I’m really waiting on and to see what happens when all five brothers are bonded.

• Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

Both yes and no. My absolute favorite genre has always been sci-fi, which I don’t write very much of. But I also read a lot of fantasy, contemporary, and when I was in university, Harlequins were the way to get out of my head and out of the heavy reading before going to bed at night. So yes, those genres do match what I write.

• Have you ever had to put an ‘in progress’ story aside because of the emotional ties with it?  You were hurting with the characters or didn’t know how to proceed?

When my characters hurt, I hurt. I hate those parts, so I tend to write very quickly while I’m doing those sections – to get to the happy parts quicker.

• Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

Absolutely. There’s enough sadness in the world and I want my happy endings.

• Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

Yes. See above for Harlequins being my escape reading during university.

• Do you think you can bring too many faults into a character that eventually it becomes too flawed to become a love interest?

Not necessarily can’t become a love interest, but definitely will become less of a character and more of a caricature. And if a characters faults aren’t balanced by good points, too, they’re going to become far less interesting to the reader, let alone a love interest.

• What’s the wildest scene you’ve imagined and did it make it into a story?

No doubt ‘milking the prostate’ which was indeed written into one of the Briar Rose books.

• If you could imagine the best possible place for you to write, where would that be and why?

I’d love a little cottage by the ocean (North Atlantic because I prefer it cold). The sound of the waves soothes my soul. And of course there wouldn’t be a lot of people around because writing happens best for me when the house is quiet and empty.

• With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain?  To get away?  To move past?  To wide our knowledge?  Why do you write?

I write because I have to. If I go too long without writing I get twitchy. And I write what I write because everyone deserves love and a happy ending. I write to make myself and my readers happy.

• What’s next for you as a writer?

There are always new characters to play with and deadlines to make me focus!

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words have kindly hosted me a number of times with my new releases – thank you very much! And every time I see the name it makes me smile. I like the idea of rogue words. I love words, period, but rogue ones, now those must be some great words.

So I have a few time wasters that are related to words and I thought I’d share a few of my favorites.

Words With Friends. Basically it’s Scrabble without stepping on anyone’s copyright. I play a number of people who I know, but I also play with random players the game selects for me. It’s pretty good at matching players with like abilities so you aren’t always trouncing or getting trounced. The only thing I don’t like about it is that when I go several weeks without playing because I am super busy, it drops all my games.

4 pics 1 word. I think I joined this one late in the game as I know it was big quite a while ago. I do love trying to figure out what the words are based on the pictures. There’s almost always one that seems out of left field compared with the others. When I’m really stuck, I try to pretend I never saw the one that doesn’t belong and concentrate on the other three. It’s always amusing to me when the one that I thought was so different from the others was not the one I thought it was!

And brand new to me and currently my favorite is Wordscapes. This one gives you a little crossword puzzle kind of layout and a group of six letters at the bottom. You need to make words out of the six letters to fill the crossword. You get points for making words that don’t go on the board but that are real words. The hardest word is almost always the ‘bonus’ word, which doesn’t connect to the rest of the grid. It’s much easier to figure out that last word when you know where at least one of the letters go! When I get stuck on this one, I’ll put it down and usually coming back to it fresh a while later helps me ‘see’ that last word I was looking for.

If you see me frowning at my phone – I’m probably playing one of those three games.

Eric doesn’t know where else to turn when his daughter is kidnapped, so he calls on his powerful ex-lover, Brock. Brock never expected to hear from Eric again, but he never got over the man, either. When Eric comes to him to help find the three-year-old Josie, there’s no way Brock can turn him down. He has the money and the contacts Eric needs, and he can’t let Eric walk out of his life again. Not after all these years.

Brock has no idea what he’s letting himself in for. Together, Eric and Josie turn Brock’s world upside down while they work with police and private security to find the people who took Josie, and to keep Eric and Josie safe while they do. Even as they get to know each other again, Brock has to fight the feelings he still has for Eric, at least for time being, which just makes it all that much harder. Can Eric and Brock find out who wants to hurt them before it’s too late, or will Brock fall off his pedestal as Eric’s hero?

I had read Unlikely Hero by Sean Michael when it first came out and thoroughly enjoyed the story then so I was curious to revisit it in audiobook format.

It had been some time so the audiobook made the story fresh again.    I love tales with ex lovers getting that second chance at love and Unlikely Hero certainly has that with Eric turning to Brock for help  after nine years because his daughter has been kidnapped.  We get an extremely emotional setup that eventually leads to their breakup details later as they work on getting Josie back.

Brock is all big, strong, hugely rich, and gorgeous man…he all but has the word hero written on his chest.  Eric is the more vulnerable high school teacher who broke it off years ago because he wanted a “normal life”, read that one outside that of a multi-millionaire, with a house in the burbs with kids.  He now has that child who has been kidnapped for no reason anyone can understand.

The rest of the novel seeks to unravel the mystery behind Josie’s kidnapped and watching Brock, and Eric reconnect, and try to figure out how to move forward as a couple, and then as a family with Josie.  Josie, a three year old, is a major character here.  I found her far more successful in the novel than here in the audiobook.  That’s due primarily to the narrator.

Narrating the voices of children accurately is incredibly tough.  You either nail it or you don’t.  And imo, Jeff Gelder just can’t get a child’s voice right.  Josie comes off sounding more like a elderly woman than a three-year old, which is very disconcerting.  Not only does she sound “older” than she is., but it comes dangerously close to being portrayed like a comedy routine because of the disconnect between the voice and the character.  That’s too bad because Gelder’s other voices are just fine for the men he’s playing.

Other factors that seem highlightered here that   perhaps I didn’t notice in the other format?  The length of time it took for the police to put all the clues and details together to catch the perpetrator seemed odd and too long.  I can’t remember.  Maybe the book was written back in 2009, so forensics was less advanced than now and that’s hard to remember when the audiobook comes out in 2018.  But when you start to focus on things that annoy you like a badly done child’s voice, then other elements start to pop up as well.  Funny how that happens.

Still, Unlikely Hero is a sweet contemporary romance with a child firmly at the center.  Love that element?  Then you are sure to love this story.  You might want to read it, however, instead of listening to it.  Jeff Gelder’s “Daddy B, Daddy B” after a while was downright irritating instead of endearing as it was in the story.  What a sham

Hunting ghosts and finding more than they bargained for.

Blaine Franks is a member of the paranormal research group the Supernatural Explorers. When the group loses their techie to a cross-country move, newly graduated Flynn Huntington gets the job. Flynn fits in with the guys right off the bat, but when it comes to him and Blaine, it’s more than just getting along.

Things heat up between Blaine and Flynn as they explore their first haunted building, an abandoned hospital, together. Their relationship isn’t all that progresses, though, and soon it seems that an odd bite on Blaine’s neck has become much more.

Hitchhiking ghosts, a tragic love story forgotten by time, and the mystery of room 204 round out a romance where the things that go bump in the night are real.

Okay, I liked this story for the most part but there were a lot of little things that didn’t work for me.  I guess from the blurb I thought these guys were established in the supernatural world much more than their little group seems to be considering they need to have day jobs to support themselves.  The ghost hunting mystery was the main focus of the story which I enjoyed but there wasn’t any connection to the characters.  I felt like I was just along for the ride and not invested in the turn out of the story and we were told a lot about how they felt for each other but not really shown.  I don’t usually have a problem with insta-love but in the context of this book and with these characters it didn’t work for me either.  There were a lot of interesting characters and I plan to continue this series to see how their TV series goes I just hope I’ll be a little more into those stories.

Kenneth Obi didn’t do a bad job narrating this story, but it didn’t work for me.  Many of the voices he uses for the characters sounded like they were high or were grating on my nerves.  I think the combination of the writing style and audio didn’t make this book as enjoyable as it would have been it I had read the book myself.

The fourth in the Dragon Soul series, Born of Air is Mark’s story, the Betereroce brother I’ve been waiting for.  Mark lost his soul mate long ago when he was murdered and since then, he’s seen little of his brothers or their new soul mates because of the memories and pain it brings up.  Mark believes there is only one soul mate and he’s lost his  forever.  Until he meets a baker who dreams of flying and a silver dragon.

Born of Air departs from the other three stories because Mark has already found and lost his mate.  In the three previous books, all three brothers needed to find their mates and had help courtesy of a tattoo and  an elf.  That  didn’t happen here. The connection that Mark and Quincy make is a familiar one and  one that Mark immediately rejects as impossible.

That impossibility will bring all the other brothers and their mates into this story to help the bonding and the relationship survive, a element I just love.

Another hallmark of this series?  The incendiary sex scenes between Quincy and Mark.  Hot, hot, hot.  Here and in every story.  These brothers have a love of kink and bdsm.  Each story should  come with its own fan or two.

I wish there had been more back history to  Mark’s previous relationship and it’s ending but perhaps that’s coming in the books yet to be released.  I hope so as I get the feeling Sean Michael is building up to some big event here when all the brothers have found their soulmates.

I don’t really feel these are standalone stories but one that builds upon the others so if you are new to the series start with Branded by Flames and work your way through all the books.  They are quick reads, very entertaining and very, very, hot!

I definitely  recommend them all.

Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

It both has and hasn’t. I read a ton of sci-fi/fantasy and a ton of romance growing up. In fact romance (Harlequin’s) were my escape, my way to wind down. So it’s interesting that that’s what I write the most. I love sci-fic and fantasy, but they are harder to write for me. I think there’s more pressure in writing that for me, because of all the reading I’ve done.

Have you ever had to put an ‘in progress’ story aside because of the emotional ties with it?  You were hurting with the characters or didn’t know how to proceed?

Just the opposite, in fact. The more the characters are hurting, the faster I write because I have to get them out of that situation.

Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

Absolutely I like them. There’s enough harshness in the world. Romance is an escape. I want people to leave my books feeling happy, positive. I want them to be able to escape, even if only for a short while.

What’s next for you as an author?

There’s always another book. I’ll finish one and go yay! and then charge right into the next one.

Ever drunk written a chapter and then read it the next day and still been happy with it?  Trust me there’s a whole world of us drunk writers dying to know.

I hardly ever drink, and when I do, it’s usually just a single drink, and I don’t think I’ve ever drunk written. I have written super exhausted and it’s hilarious to go back and see the last few paragraphs I wrote – it looks like I was high or drunk, trust me!

If you could imagine the best possible place for you to write, where would that be and why?

On the beach (in the shade).

With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain?  To get away?  To move past?  To widen our knowledge?  Why do you write?

I write because I have to. What I write is as an escape from all the negativity in the world.
