A Chaos Moondrawn Release Day Review: The Librarian’s Ghost (The Supers #2) by Sean Michael

Rating: 3.25 stars out of 5

I was really excited to read this one because I enjoyed the first one in the series, The Supers. Coming off of a house exploration where there was no paranormal activity, the guys get asked to investigate McGregor Mansion. The gothic style house was built in the 1780’s, so there have been plenty of deaths on the property. There is something weird and dangerous going on right away.

Many of the details just don’t gel for me in this book. We’re told Payne McGregor is at his wit’s end and is ready to pay for an exorcism, yet at the house he seems resigned, dismissive of the things that are happening. We keep getting told how rude Will, the cameraman, is to Payne upon meeting, but I didn’t read it that way at all so I was a little confused. It wasn’t until about chapter four that we even get a bare bones description of what Payne looks like (trim beard and glasses.) Then, even though he is older than the other characters, and highly educated, he ends up sounding the same way they do when he thinks or speaks. As soon as possession came up, Flynn said he was “out” which I assume was a stress response to what happen in the first book. It’s unclear to me if he was kidding or not, but he does stay with the team.

There are other things that don’t work for me. For example, near the beginning Will is worried about demons. Later, randomly, we get this sentence “‘None of the workers saw a demon, though, right?’ Payne offered.” Why was Payne worried about demons? (As a weird aside, daemon is the Latin word for the ancient Greek daimon which is just a benevolent spirit; the idea of malevolent “demons” is ancient Near Eastern and Abrahamic. I thought it was strange Will used holy water and then prayed at one point, even if it was casually done in fear. If the author is going with quasi-Christian ideals, what is done with the bones later is anathema. My personal preference would have been to do without religious references altogether.) The first book was more atmospheric, even though the situation turned out to be less dire. I also missed the sexual tension from the previous book. I like forced proximity as a trope, but the time shifting scenario created to get Payne and Will together didn’t help cement their attraction like it was meant to. The banter seemed forced and the flirting was strange and awkward. Even if they were being influenced by a ghost, this was handled in a very clunky way so I didn’t feel emotionally invested in the explicit sex scene that happens after.

The plot moves towards the final showdown in the basement. This time when Will is possessed it is very noticeable; if it had been that bad in the beginning I doubt the men would have been able to shrug that off and still get together so it makes me understand what the author was trying to do at the beginning. The other problem is what they do with the bones. No matter how you slice or dice it, they broke the law. Since there are clues about where this takes place (Aero bar and Coffee Crisp), my best guess would be Canada. I don’t know Canadian law but the Coronor’s Act or the Archaeology Act would have to be considered. In the UK, it would be the Burial Act of 1857. If this takes place in the US, state laws differ, but every jurisdiction has some kind of law governing the discovery of human remains. In Utah, for instance, it is a third degree felony for anyone except an archaeologist, the Medical Examiner’s office, law enforcement, or a licensed mortician to disturb, move, remove, conceal, or destroy human remains. Since they are filming this to make a TV show, it’s a problem. Maybe in trying to appeal to all audiences the author was vague about which country this actually takes place in, but the devil is still in the details. Like when after all this incredibly disgusting stuff happens, Will kisses Payne on the neck before they take a shower. I cannot even convey how skeeved out this made me.

This could have been a nice opposites attract story with the mild mannered librarian and the cameraman who looks like a biker–with both of them liking organization and being compatible in the bedroom, it would have worked. As it is I have a difficult time believing they are moving in together after two days. While I really liked the first book in the series, this suffers a bit by comparison. Since there are two more ghost hunters in the group, I would expect there to be two more books for Jason and Darnell who are barely mentioned in this book. I would cautiously recommend this book if you like ghost stories and want an easy read as long as you are not too concerned with having a lot of detail.

The cover artist is Alexandria Corza. It is in keeping with the other Dreamspun Beyond covers. The model represents the main character Payne, who is a librarian. Some of the scenes also take place in the library of the mansion so it’s appropriate to the story.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Sean Michael here today on tour for the latest in his The Supers series, The Librarian’s Ghost.  Welcome, Sean.

♦

Thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me today!

When I started writing this story, I knew in my head what in general was going to happen. I knew there was a house the Supers would be called in to see, that this one was going to be the real thing, and that they were going to save the day, of course. I also knew this was Will’s story, and I had Payne slowly taking shape in my head as Will’s guy.

That’s usually about what I have in my back pocket when I start writing. Bare bones because I’ve learned that anytime I plan too much, the characters laugh at me and take off in their own merry direction.

So I start writing. The guys wrap up their latest case, they talk about their new case. They get to the MacGregor House where everything is supposed to be going down, they meet Payne. And Will turns into this huge asshole. I’m writing it and going WTF, Will? This is your forever man, why are you blowing it like this? And I’m focussed on how Payne is taking Will and it isn’t great, but then I notice that the other characters are also all going WTF, Will?

I keep writing, I try and turn Will around. I think I finally have when I get to a scene at a restaurant and Will is suddenly his usual self again and is being nice to Payne. Okay, cool. Back on track. And then they get back to the MacGregor House and Will turns into an big time jerk again. So I go, WTF, Will?

Then, of course, it dawns on me that Will is not being himself for a reason. At that point I stopped trying to fight it and let the characters do what they would, because clearly, they knew better than me. And in the end, they totally did!

I hope you enjoy The Librarian’s Ghost and if you haven’t read The Supers yet, you can still enjoy it, just know that Will is not usually a first class butthole.

Can love survive the perils of MacGregor House?

The Supernatural Explorers are back and looking for their next big paranormal case. They might’ve found it in a plea from Payne, a mild-mannered librarian who has inherited the family mansion—MacGregor House. Since moving in a few months ago, Payne’s exhausted the list of ghost hunters and experts in his quest for help. The Supers are his last chance.

So why does normally good-natured cameraman Will take an instant dislike to Payne? For that matter, why has he felt irritable and angry since they arrived at the site? It soon becomes clear that the answers they seek will be found in the basement—where nobody has gone since Payne was a little boy. As the haunting grows deadlier, things get sweeter between Will and Payne, but all hell’s about to break loose when they breach the basement door.

Will they be ready?

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Sean Michael here today talking about his latest release Personal Best 2.  Welcome, Sean.

Thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me today!

So, we fell back by an hour over the weekend and I haven’t been able to catch up since. The time change – both of them – really mess me up. You wouldn’t think an hour would make that big a difference, but it does, every time, and it seems to be getting harder to deal with the older I get.

Plus it’s now dark at like 4:30, and that’s only going to get worse the closer we get to Christmas. I think that’s why we do lights and decorations outside – it really brightens the dark nights up.

I imagine for someone like Mike, from Personal Best 2, who very much relies on his routine, it wouldn’t matter. He’d simply adjust everything by an hour. Or at least his coach Jessy would!

Mike and Jessy were such a joy to write, I did all three books over one summer and it was a sad thing for me when they were done with their story because I didn’t want to let them go. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I loved writing them.

Swimmer Mike Gauliet is moving up in the elite ranks of the American swim team, despite his repetitive stress injuries. He’s hiding his pain from coach Jessy Turner, not wanting to give in to it or let his coach and lover down, and by the time he gets treatment, it’s almost too late.

Jessy helps Mike heal, both in an out of the bedroom, and their need for each other grows as quickly as Mike’s career. They’re scorching hot and ready to go to the top competitions when another injury forces Mike to the sidelines. Jessy thinks this one is no accident, and Mike has to work hard to recover the lost ground.

Mike needs a break from the nonstop stress of training, so they move to the coast so Mike can recuperate once again. But their struggles don’t end with getting him back in competition form, and they can’t truly call it a victory unless they can find the balance between their romantic relationship and Mike grabbing the success he’s earned.

A MelanieM New Release Review: Owned by Fate (Dragon Soul #5) by Sean Michael

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

The Beteferoce brothers: five dragon shifters, each with a strong elemental power and a destiny that will not be denied.

Dr. Mike Beteferoce turned his back on magic long ago. His heart broke and his desire for a soul mate disappeared. When he sees his family crest branded above Corryn’s heart, his first instinct is to flee. The last thing he wants now is a Fae interfering in his life—especially one who has already rejected him.

But fate has other plans.

Corryn knows Mike is his soul mate, has known since the sigil was branded on his skin centuries ago. Long before Mike came to him as a studly young dragon just entering his prime. It was far too early for them to be together then, but now their time has come.

But despite their draw to each other, Corryn doesn’t believe Mike can accept him for who—and what—he is. Mike must breathe life into their bond—loving Corryn as both soul mate and Fae—if they are to fulfill their destiny

In what I assumes is the finale for the Dragon Soul series,Owned by Fate (Dragon Soul #5) by Sean Michael gives us the last story of the fifth Beteferoce dragon brother.  He’s the one that has been missing from the other brother’s stories, a mere mention in passing of a brother who never comes to close into the new family dynamics that is happening.  Each brother has been finding his mate, drawn in part through a tattoo placed there by Corryn, an elf long in service to the Beteferoce family.  But we never knew exactly what  Mike or Corryn’s story was. Now we get both because they are fiercely intertwined as we should have suspected.

In a  deeply satisfying finale, we learn the origin of Corryn’s role with the Beteferoce brothers, the magical tattoos he’s used to draw each mate to each brother, and his own back history with Mike.  In one section, it’s unbelievably painful, enough to draw tears, I’ve come to care that much for Corryn over the series.  All the brothers and their mates for that matter, so it’s an enormous plus that we get the inclusion of all the couples here at the end for the big finale.

I loved the section with all the mated pairs flying together as I could see it so clearly.  My only wish is that this book was twice as long.  Half for the couple to figure their relationship and the rest to all come together to untangle the lore surrounding them  and their mates and the resolution.

But I will be happy with Owned by Fate. It supplied me with the answers to the questions raised in the other stories, all the brothers appeared with their mates and got their HEA, and a lovely finale!  Sigh!  Dragons are definitely a weakness of mine and Sean Michael’s series checked all the boxes.  If you love sexy men, kinky hot scenes, and dragons this is the series for you!

Cover art is nice, brands the series and is eye catching.

Thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me today!

December is such a busy month, isn’t it? On top of all the regular stuff there’s parties and presents and a big meal with family and friends. It just seems to be go go go until the big day and then it’s all over just like that.

I have been a cookie baking fiend. I always give family and close friends a variety of cookies. I love being able to make a wide variety and then split them out and everyone gets a half dozen of a bunch of different kinds. It works out well. But it makes for a very busy cookie-baking time! I have my favorites, but I also bake a few that I never eat because I know family members love them best. My favorite this year was honeycomb – because omg, it worked and I didn’t burn down the house!

I imagine of all the guys in Home and Heart that Sawyer is the one most likely to bake cookies, although he’ll have an enthusiastic helper in Derek. And all the guys will definitely help eat said cookies. As to what kind of a cookie-man each of the four main characters are – I’ll let you decide for yourself what kind you think they’d each like!

And that just begs the question – what kind of cookie do you like best?

Is it possible to find the heart’s home twice in a lifetime?

Six years ago, Sawyer Burroughs’s life fell apart. His soul mate and husband of four years died of cancer, and he fell into depression… and a bottle. It’s taken six years, but he’s turned his life around and is ready to start again on the other side of the country.

In his new apartment, he’s welcomed by his young and carefree neighbor, Derek, from across the hall. Derek is eager to make Sawyer feel welcome and even offers him a place to stay when Sawyer arrives ahead of his furniture.

The upstairs neighbors are just as friendly, and soon Sawyer finds a place with the friends-with-benefits threesome. He’s not the shy, vanilla lover they think he is, though, and he’s hiding more than a pair of nipple rings. As it happens, the guys have kinky secrets of their own, but for four men to make a BDSM relationship last, they’ll have to figure some things out.

Excerpt:

Sawyer opened the door to his new place and stared around at the empty space. He’d rented the place sight unseen, and he had to admit it looked small without any furniture. Even with furniture it was going to be smaller than the house back… the old house. He took a deep breath.

Okay. Okay, this was going to be home now. He’d sold everything he didn’t need, he’d sold the house, and he’d packed up his SUV and moved across country to Halifax.

A new house. A new start. A new life.

He wasn’t going to cry. He wasn’t. He was a grown man with cash and a good freelance job writing for catalogs with a side gig of writing greeting cards. Change was good. Scary, but good. Right? Right. He took another deep breath and squared his shoulders.

Sawyer opened the windows to let the air in; then he went to explore—he had a nice living area, an eat-in kitchen that was plenty big enough to cook in, a master, and a tiny second bedroom for an office. The leasing agent said it was the smallest apartment of the four, but it suited him, and the price was reasonable.

The building was an old house converted into four apartments. The bones of the place were lovely. He just hoped the other tenants didn’t throw too many loud parties. Gosh, that was such an old-man thing to think, wasn’t it?

Of course, he was a widower, a recovering alcoholic, and a bit of a hermit. Which made him sound ancient. But it was the mileage not the years, wasn’t it?

He supposed he should do something about getting the stuff in his van into the apartment. At least a chair so he had somewhere to sit. He had a couple of lawn chairs, a foldout cot, his laptop, his books, and his kitchen stuff with him. The rest he was going to have to buy. Now that he was here without anything, it was tempting to second-guess the decision to sell everything, but his reasoning had been sound. He was starting anew, and that included leaving behind the things he’d shared with James and actually starting fresh.

A knock sounded at the door, startling him out of his thoughts.

He jumped, put his hand on his chest, then went to the door, curious. He opened it slowly. “Hello?”

A young guy with shaggy blond hair and lovely gray eyes stood there, lounging against the door. “Hey, man. I’m across the hall in 1B—Derek. Nice to meet you.”

“Derek? Hello, I’m Sawyer Ham… Burroughs.”

“Hamburroughs? Cool.” Derek looked past him. “Dude, your place is pretty bare.”

“This is my first hour, and it’s just Burroughs.” He didn’t know why he’d stopped using James’s name, but… this was part of his new start, right?

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Sean Michael here today in our interview chair talking about writing, characters, and his new release, Educating The Professor.  Welcome, Sean.

Thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for interviewing me today.

  • Do you feel there’s a tight line between Mary Sue or should I say Gary Stu and using your own experiences to create a character?

I think the Gary Stu phenomena is more about inserting a perfect vision of oneself into a story rather than one’s experiences.

  • Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

My favorite genre to read has always been sci-fi and fantasy, but I also read a lot of romance as a teenager and beyond. I used to read a Harlequin every night before going to sleep during university – it was a way to turn my brain off from school work and let it settle. So yeah, I’d say it carried into my choice of writing genre.

  • Have you ever had to put an ‘in progress’ story aside because of the emotional ties with it?  You were hurting with the characters or didn’t know how to proceed?

I actually find I do just the opposite – the more the characters are hurting, the faster I write. I hate it when they’re hurting and I have to write as quickly as possible to get them to a good place.

  • Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

Absolutely. There’s enough sadness and negativity in the world. I want my HFN and HEA.

  • Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

I think I answered that above 😉

  • If you write contemporary romance, is there such a thing as making a main character too “real”?  Do you think you can bring too many faults into a character that eventually it becomes too flawed to become a love interest?

I think we don’t need the nitty gritty details of a character – the number of bowel movements he needs, stuff like that. But I think flaws make a character more real, more believable. And often more loveable.

  • What’s the wildest scene you’ve imagined and did it make it into a story?

I don’t know – I think I pretty much go ahead and include all the wild stuff in a lot of my stories…

If you could imagine the best possible place for you to write, where would that be and why?

Somewhere that I could hear and see the waves of the ocean.

  • With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain?  To get away?  To move past?  To widen our knowledge?  Why do you write?

I write about love and happy endings because there is so much going on in the world and so much of it is negative. I want to write about people finding their happily ever.

What’s next for you as a writer?

I’m working on a story featuring a triplet – his brothers will also be getting their stories. And I’m working on a little something for Valentine’s Day.

Another good Sean Michael book.  Kenn is such an introvert but thanks to his friend Tim gets him to the Rainbow Mixer.  Dave is instantly smitten with Kenn and spends as much time as possible with him.

I enjoyed this book but didn’t feel a lot of depth to it.  I connected with the characters but everything seemed surface level.

I had a little trouble with the quick friendship that fast become friends with benefits and it felt a little like Dave was pushing himself on Kenn.  Their kinks match perfectly though we had to watch Kenn come to terms with what he really wants.  At times I had trouble keeping track of the timeline as it all seemed to move so fast and I thought the drama with Kenn’s ex didn’t really do anything for the story.

The cover art by L.C. Chase is great and I like the variety of visuals.

✒

Thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me today.

One of the things I really enjoy when writing is being able to create dream homes for my characters. These are places that if I were to design a home for myself, I’d like these things. I don’t always get to do this – in Educating the Professor, for example, the characters were both on a budget and had a tiny studio apartment and a room in a house with a bunch of roommates. However, in Inked Music, both characters had money, so I was able to play.

For Rene, the suave businessman, I gave him the top three floors of a high rise downtown. I don’t even know if such a thing exists, but in my imagination it sure does. Floor to ceiling windows to let in the light – and the view of the city lit up at night, and the “main floor” where the front door opens into is an open concept with large, airy rooms and a fireplace. The floor downstairs is set up like a basement – no windows in this one, and there’s a home theatre, a weight room and a games room. Upstairs, the top of the three floors and the true penthouse of the building, is bedrooms and the playroom. More floor to ceiling windows and the playroom has every amenity and toy you could imagine.

For Gavin, I imagined he lived on the canal, in one of the great big houses that sit there. It’s been renovated inside, with a huge kitchen. My favorite part of Gavin’s house is the sunroom out the back that opens onto a big, lush and green (in the summer anyway) backyard. Tall tress and hedges offer privacy.

The fun thing is being able to make as many dream homes as I have men who can afford them.

What’s your dream home look like?

When Rene Conette attends an intimate performance at a local bar, the guitarist moves him enough that he attempts to go backstage but is stymied by the man’s bodyguard. Putting it down as not meant to be, he goes on with his life only to run into the man again, late at night at a bookstore.

Gavin Turner used to be a famous musician until an obsessed fan kidnapped and tortured him. Then it came out that he was into the BDSM lifestyle, and the court of public opinion ravaged him. He lost his Master and his self-confidence. Now he hides behind his ink and his bodyguards, who make sure he doesn’t come into contact with anyone or anything he doesn’t want to. Though it’s been years since he satisfied his needs, he doesn’t think he can trust again.

If Rene can work his way past Gavin’s defenses, they might find they complement each other perfectly.

Rene Conette is a bored businessman looking for…something. The first impression is of complete privilege so I wasn’t sure if I liked him, but I found myself warming to him more and more as he is patient and kind, if used to getting his way. Gavin Turner is a musician with a haunting past: an obsessed fan kidnapped and tortured him. Once his interest in BDSM became public, people judged that he either enjoyed it or got what he deserved. The cast is completed by twin brothers Silas and Dev, former police who helped rescue Gavin and now work as his private security.

Gavin’s history sets up a way for Rene and Gavin to take time to establish trust before adding mild BDSM elements into their relationship. The sexual aspect does start surprisingly fast. The book is definitely erotic romance going from one hot sex scene to another, which is what the author does well. It’s the the dialogue in the getting to know each other scenes and the scenes between sex scenes that don’t seem to flow as easily. After setting up Silas and Dev as Gavin’s protectors and family, they are largely ignored for the rest of the book. There is more than one conversation about Gavin’s relationship with them not being sexual, which is a little repetitive. If they are supposed to be Gavin’s family and closest friends, it seems strange that Rene ignores them. I know they are supposed to be on duty, especially when outside, but in Rene’s home in a secure building where you have to be buzzed up, the fact that they are on high alert is a little odd to me. Really though it’s the smallest part of the book. The majority of the book is the sex scenes. While hot, they are pretty tame so this may be a good book for people who don’t like anything hardcore.

They are both wealthy, so they do live in their own little bubble on their own schedule. Work is only mentioned briefly. At the beginning, it did seem as though Rene was in the closet, or just very discreet, taking a female friend to all of his work or social functions. Given the issues Gavin’s last Dom had with his fame after what happened, it did make me wonder if that would also be addressed with Rene, but it’s never mentioned again. This book does end on a HFN/HEA. If the author does write another book with these characters, maybe focusing on the twins, I would like to see what would happen if Gaven was recognized and no longer able to be incognito and how that would affect their relationship. In the end, even for an erotic romance, I guess I wanted a bit more plot and a few more details. The book is surprisingly low angst for the subject matter, has steamy scenes, and a sweet, quick romance.

The cover art is by L.C. Chase. It shows Gaven, insular and alone, focused on what matters most to him. He’s described as being thin with dark hair, dark eyes, and tattoos so this isn’t quite how I pictured him.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Sean Michael here today talking about writing, characters, and his new novel The More the Merrier.  Welcome, Sean!

Thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me today.

I loved revisiting the men from The Teddy Bear Club when writing The More the Merrier. I knew when I’d finished the first book that Logan and Dirk were going to be the next couple, but I had no idea what their story was going to be.

Both men had little girls, and I assumed they’d have a fairly regular courtship and maybe a little drama between the girls, but as soon as I started writing, Logan up and throws a wrench into the works. Or rather, a bunch of babies! I do love it when the characters just look at me and go, “no, you don’t get to dictate our lives, we do – remember, you’re just taking notes.”

The best books to write for me are always the ones where the characters grab the story and run with it. Unless I try to fight them, those are the books that flow, that write up quickly, where I’m running, figuratively speaking, just to keep up. Trying to fight the characters (which totally happens when I’m sure this is how the story is going to go and I’m trying to hit a certain word count) almost always winds up with the writing dragging and it’s long and hard (and not in the fun way) and it just takes me forever to come up with the word count. Then, when I finally really pay attention and listen to them, then the book starts working properly again and that is always such a relief!

With The More the Merrier, I didn’t fight the guys, I just let Logan and Dirk run with their story the way they wanted it, and as a result, I had fun writing it and I think they’re a darn good story as a result. Hopefully you do too!

Too much of a good thing?

When Logan gets the call about newborn triplets in need of a home, he steps up, realizing too late the daunting task he’s taken on. He’d be lost without the men of the Teddy Bear Club—especially Dirk.

Dirk even offers to spend spring break at Logan’s home, helping him and the babies settle in. He loves being a dad, and he wants to help Logan find the same joy. It doesn’t hurt that they enjoy spending time together.

Before they even realize it, they’re settling into a routine… becoming a family.

Falling in love.

But their new bond is about to face the ultimate test. Will they come through and realize that with love, there’s no such thing as enough?
